LAP-BAND
The Basics of LAP-BAND Surgery
The concept of laparoscopic gastric banding is fairly straightforward: during the procedure, a bariatric surgeon places a silicone ring around the stomach, effectively creating two stomach pouches. The ring is attached to a "port" through which the surgeon can inject or remove fluid, which causes the gastric band to inflate or deflate. When the band is inflated, it restricts the capacity of the stomach, and patients should feel full after eating less food. As they eat less, patients are meant to experience gradual weight loss.
Some Problems with the LAP-BAND
It's a foreign object in your body.
Gastric banding may seem preferable to other types of weight loss surgery because it doesn't involve removing part of the stomach. However, placing a foreign object in your body comes with its own set of problems. Many patients experience band intolerance, in which their bodies form excessive scar tissue around the band or develop infections.
It doesn't last forever.
The LAP-BAND must be removed from your body at some point. If the band is left in place for too long, it can erode into the stomach or cause infection. Most gastric bands are removed within 10 years of placement, if not sooner, because complications arise. Unfortunately, once the band has been removed, many patients experience weight regain and lose any progress they were able to make.
Patients don't lose weight.
One study revealed that only 43 percent of patients with a gastric band lost at least half of their excess weight in seven years. Another study demonstrated that gastric band patients lost about 10 percent of their excess weight in four years, while gastric sleeve patients lost almost 18 percent and gastric bypass patients lost almost 28 percent. If you want to reduce your body mass index and experience healthy, sustainable weight loss, LAP-BAND surgery is not the best option for you.Do You Need a LAP-BAND Revision? Choose Vision Bariatrics

More Effective Bariatric Surgeries
Gastric Sleeve
The gastric sleeve, also known as sleeve gastrectomy, has become one of the most popular surgical procedures performed at Vision Bariatrics because it is effective and relatively simple. The gastric sleeve procedure involves the removal of most of the stomach. The remaining stomach pouch is in the shape of a sleeve and is about the size of a banana. Because the stomach is significantly reduced, patients feel full after eating less and can experience healthy weight loss.
Gastric Bypass
Gastric bypass surgery remains the most well-known bariatric procedure. During gastric bypass surgery, the surgeon reduces the size of the stomach and also reroutes a portion of the small intestine. By rearranging the small intestine, the surgery changes the way your body absorbs nutrients. Thus, the surgery helps you lose weight by reducing the amount you can eat and reducing the number of calories you absorb from your food. Patients can also consider the less invasive mini bypass.
