Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Being overweight can make daily tasks difficult, put you at risk of serious health conditions, and make you feel self-conscious. If you've tried to lose weight with diet and exercise for years with no success, gastric sleeve surgery could improve your quality of life. How can gastric sleeve surgery in Tijuana, Mexico, better my life?

Benefits of Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Decreased Appetite

During gastric sleeve surgery, one of our board-certified bariatric surgeons will reduce your stomach by about 90 percent to the size and shape of a banana. This allows you to feel full by eating less than you normally would after surgery.

Reduced Health Issues

Studies show that bariatric surgery can alleviate and even reverse diabetes and other conditions associated with excessive weight.

Improved Quality of Life

Following bariatric surgery, many patients experience newfound confidence and find themselves participating in everyday life to their full capacity.

"I Feel Completely Different"

"Weight loss surgery has done so many things to help me. Before the surgery, I weighed over 400 pounds. I had no confidence, I didn’t like going out in public and felt constantly depressed. Two years after my gastric bypass surgery I feel completely different..." Mike A.

What happens during the surgery?

A Closer Look at Gastric Sleeve

Gastric sleeve is a restrictive surgery that limits how much you can eat. During the procedure at our Tijuana practice, your surgeon will access your stomach using minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques. Using a surgical stapler, he will then create a stomach "sleeve" similar to the size and shape of a banana. Once the stomach is stapled into two sections, the larger section will be removed. The remaining sleeve will only be about 10 percent of the size of your natural stomach.

Unlike a gastric bypass, this technique decreases your appetite while keeping your intestines fully intact.

Am I a good candidate for treatment?

Important Considerations for Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Body Mass Index

In order to undergo gastric sleeve surgery, you should have a body mass index (or BMI) of over 30 and under 50.

No Previous Bypass

Patients who have already undergone gastric bypass surgery are not good candidates for this procedure.

Heart Health

Patients who have had a heart attack or suffer from a heart condition may be disqualified from this surgery.

Previous Gastric Band

The LAP-Band is a type of adjustable gastric band that is intended to restrict how much you can eat. If your LAP-Band has become loose or slipped, you may need revision surgery to achieve your desired results. Gastric sleeve is a popular method of revision surgery that can help you achieve the long-term weight loss you always wanted.

We Never Recommend Gastric Sleeve Unless We Think It's Completely Safe

Before approving you for weight loss surgery, our team will conduct extensive pre-operative examinations to ensure you are healthy enough for treatment. This pre-operative screening includes:

  • EKG
  • Labwork
  • Chest x-ray
  • Evaluation by a cardiologist

Your safety is our first priority. We will not allow you to enter the operating room if we do not feel that you can safely undergo surgery.

What to Expect  During Your Procedure & Stay

The day before your surgery, you and any loved ones traveling with you will check in at our private campus

Once you are prepped for surgery, our anesthesiologist, Dr. Oscar Contreras, will place you under anesthesia to ensure that you are fully asleep during your surgery.

The doctor will create up to five small incisions on the abdomen. He will insert instruments and carefully remove a portion of your stomach.
The remaining part of your stomach will be rejoined using surgical staples.
Your surgeon will remove the tools and close your incisions with stitches.

Although the length of your procedure will vary, most gastric sleeve surgeries are completed within one and a half hours

Following surgery, you will spend four nights at our hospital in Tijuana. Every room is equipped with Netflix, a companion bed, and private bathroom for your comfort.

Weight loss is a journey...

Recovering after Sleeve Gastrectomy

To set you up for success and consistent, long-term weight loss after your departure from Mexico, we have nutritional consultations with every patient before they leave our hospital.

We also require that all weight loss surgery patients perform a barium swallow at the hospital. During this exam, you will be given a solution that contains barium sulfate. We will then conduct an x-ray exam to track the solution as it moves through your gastrointestinal organs. This is an important precautionary step to ensure that there are no leaks after your gastric sleeve.

Exercise and diet are both necessary to lose weight.
Exercise and diet are both necessary to lose weight.

First Few Days

Our team will monitor your immediate recovery in the hospital. For the first few days, you can only consume clear liquids in small amounts. If you recover well within this time frame, we will discharge you.

First Month

For the first month, you should follow a diet of pureed foods and protein shakes. Make sure to stay hydrated and take it easy. Your body will need time to adjust to the limited number of calories. After about 30 days, your doctor may approve increasing your activity level.

Months Two and Three

Slowly, you can move from liquids to solid foods. You will probably start to notice changes in your body, such as feeling lighter and more energetic. You should follow up with your dietician or nutritionist regularly and begin a more rigorous exercise routine.

The results? Life-changing.

Most Patients Experience Significant Weight Loss

In general, patients who undergo gastric sleeve surgery lose about 60 percent of their excess body weight over a period of 12 to 18 months.

The results of your weight loss surgery depend on how well you follow your post-operative diet and exercise plan. It is crucial to limit your portions to avoid stretching out the sleeve created by your bariatric surgeon.

Understanding potential risks can help you prepare for surgery...

Follow Your Doctor's Instructions to Minimize Risks & Side Effects

Although gastric sleeve surgery boasts a low rate of complications compared to other bariatric procedures, patients should be aware of the potential risks and complications.

Digestive Issues

Immediately after surgery, you may experience nausea, vomiting, or constipation. Dumping syndrome is another potential side effect of gastric sleeve surgery.

Nutritional Concerns

Certain foods may not agree with your stomach after a sleeve gastrectomy. You may also have to take vitamins and supplements to counteract potential nutritional deficiencies.

Infection or Leaks

In very rare cases, infection, bleeding, or a leak along the staple line can occur after a gastric sleeve procedure. Our skilled surgeons take care to reduce the risk of these issues.

Our team will guide you through your recovery to help decrease the risk of complication. Carefully following your doctor's instructions can also decrease the chances of health concerns after your treatment in Tijuana.

Our 5-Year Follow-Up Program

Many patients are worried about not having the support they need when they return home from their bariatric surgery. But we offer a five-year patient follow-up program at no additional cost. This program gives gastric sleeve patients access to our nutritionists, doctors, and treatment coordinators. No matter what country you call home, you can speak to our team in Mexico via e-mail, phone, or video conferencing if any questions arise during your recovery.

This all sounds impressive. But can I afford the procedure?

Is gastric sleeve surgery really worth the cost?

Remember that there are also other options for weight loss surgery...

The Right Procedure for You Depends on Many Factors

When choosing between gastric bypass and gastric sleeve surgery, there are a variety of factors you need to consider. One major difference between the two bariatric procedures is the candidacy requirements. For example, some patients have a BMI which is too high to qualify for gastric bypass surgery. In this case, sleeve gastrectomy may be a better choice.

Generally, gastric sleeve surgery is considered safer and less complex than a bypass. However, gastric bypass has a longer track record of success and may offer better long-term results. Be sure to discuss all of your options with our team at Vision Bariatrics
