Bariatric Surgery and Diabetes

Most obese patients suffer from type 2 diabetes, a serious health condition that can lead to heart disease, kidney failure, and even death. Studies show that bariatric surgery, especially gastric bypass surgery, can lead to improvement or total remission of diabetes. Could weight loss surgery at the Vision Bariatrics bariatric center in Tijuana, Mexico, alleviate your diabetes?

Your Life Can Look Radically Different Thanks to Bariatric Surgery

No More Medication

After bariatric surgery, many patients who manage type 2 diabetes with medication or insulin can eventually abandon those supplements, which can save money, reduce stress and hassle, and set patients free from negative side effects.

Improved Health

Type 2 diabetes is associated with many other health concerns like heart disease, strokes, impotency, depression, and more. When diabetes improves thanks to weight loss surgery, related health conditions can also improve, leading to a healthier, more fulfilling lifestyle.

Longer Life

Diabetes decreases life expectancy. In fact, there is a diabetes-associated death in the world every 10 seconds, and the disease is one of the top ten causes of death in the United States. By seeking a cure for your diabetes, you can add many healthy years to your life.

Can Weight Loss Surgery  Really Cure Diabetes?

Yes! Over the last decade, numerous studies have concluded that bariatric surgery can lead to improvement or total remission of type 2 diabetes.

Because bariatric procedures like gastric bypass or the gastric sleeve involve a reduction in the amount of food consumed and the amount of calories absorbed, resistance to insulin is reduced, improving type 2 diabetes.

Additionally, in the case of gastric bypass surgery, the reorientation of the intestines leads to the spontaneous release of a molecule called GLUT-1 that helps the body use glucose. Weight loss scientists are still studying this phenomenon, but what is certain is that it can lead to natural glucose absorption and long-term remission of diabetes.

I highly recommend Vision Bariatrics to anyone that is interested in having Bariatric sleeve done. I went alone and never felt scared at all. I was picked up by a driver at the San Diego Airport and taken straight to the hospital. You will then get your lab work done and brought to your room. I didn't have to share a room with anyone either. The doctors, nurses and staff are all so kind and very attentive. Awesome experience and again I highly recommend Vision Bariatrics.

Gastric Bypass vs. Gastric Sleeve and Their Impact on Diabetes

At Vision Bariatrics in Tijuana, Mexico, our board-certified bariatric surgeons specialize in gastric bypass surgery and gastric sleeve surgery. While both bariatric surgeries can lead to long-term, sustainable weight loss, studies show that they have different effects on type 2 diabetes.

Gastric Bypass

Also known as Roux-en-y, gastric bypass surgery involves creating a smaller stomach pouch and reorienting the digestive system so that the body absorbs fewer calories and nutrients. During the procedure, which can be performed laparoscopically, the bariatric surgeon first reduces the size of your stomach to about the size of a walnut. Then, he splits the small intestine and attaches the lower portion directly to the new stomach pouch. Finally, the upper portion of the intestine is reattached to the digestive tract further down on the lower portion.

Now, the patient's appetite is reduced because of the smaller stomach size, and their body will absorb fewer calories because food encounters less of the digestive fluids of the intestines.

The impact this bariatric surgery can have on type 2 diabetes is remarkable. After a gastric bypass, more than 80 percent of diabetic patients experience complete remission of type 2 diabetes. Even patients who don't see complete remission are able to reduce their dependency on medication or insulin.

The most incredible aspect of the relationship between diabetes and gastric bypass is that diabetes goes into remission rapidly after the weight loss surgery is completed, maybe only in a matter of days. Before you notice the incredible weight loss results of this bariatric surgery, you may already be diabetes-free. Ultimately, while all weight loss surgeries can lead to some level of improvement with type 2 diabetes, if you desire freedom from diabetes as soon as possible, the gastric bypass procedure will best meet your needs.

Gastric Sleeve

Our surgeons also perform gastric sleeve surgery at our ultra-modern bariatric hospital in Tijuana, Mexico. Also known as a sleeve gastrectomy, this procedure involves a significant reduction of the stomach. During the surgery, the bariatric surgeon will laparoscopically remove most of the stomach tissue so that the remaining stomach pouch is about the size and shape of a banana. Thanks to the reduced stomach size, patients feel full after eating less food, leading to healthy weight loss.

According to the latest statistics, about 60 percent of diabetic patients who undergo a sleeve gastrectomy experience remission of their type 2 diabetes. However, because this procedure is not malabsorptive, meaning it does not directly affect the body's ability to absorb nutrients, diabetes remission does not occur in the extraordinarily fast timeframe that it does with gastric bypass.

Great experience from start to finish. Communication was better than any other clinic or hospital here in the states. My husband and I were never scared or worried. Dr Camelo was amazing! I wish I would have done this sooner.

You Can Eliminate Immense Health Care Costs By Getting Rid of Diabetes

The CDC compiles many statistics on the harmful impact diabetes has on an individual. Beyond the suffering diabetes can cause to a person’s health, quality of life, and family, the disease often creates massive financial burdens.

Having diabetes can more than double your lifetime health care costs. The CDC notes that anywhere from 48% to 64% of a diabetic's lifetime health care costs will be spent managing complications related to the disease.

An American with employer-sponsored health insurance on average spends $320,000 in lifetime medical care costs. This number can skyrocket depending on your personal needs and does not account for unexpected fees and elective procedures. This means that defeating diabetes with the power of bariatric surgery can potentially save you hundreds of thousands of dollars.
